The Boy on the Street

The autumn wind swept through the bustling streets of downtown Seattle, carrying the scent of rain and coffee. Laura adjusted the collar of her black leather jacket, her boots clicking softly against the damp pavement. Beside her, eight-year-old Caleb skipped happily, his dark green bomber jacket zipped tight against the chill. It was supposed to be a normal Tuesday afternoon, a simple trip to the bookstore after school. But in a single heartbeat, Laura’s reality shattered.

Caleb suddenly stopped near a rusted metal lamppost, his grip tightening on her hand.

"Mom! Mom, look! Why does he look so much like me?"
he asked, his young voice cutting through the hum of city traffic.

Laura followed her son's pointing finger toward a recessed doorway. Sitting on a damp piece of cardboard was a homeless child, shivering in an oversized, dirty hoodie. When the boy looked up, Laura felt the breath leave her lungs. It was like looking at a mirror image of Caleb. The same bright blue eyes, the same dusting of freckles across the nose, the identical structure of his jaw. The resemblance was uncanny, impossible, and terrifying.

As they drew closer, the homeless boy, startled by their intense gaze, clutched something tightly in his dirty hands. It was a worn pewter locket. With trembling fingers, he clicked it open, revealing a vintage photograph of two newborn babies sleeping side by side. Engraved beneath the picture were the words: "To our eyes, I see they are twins."

Laura fell to her knees, ignoring the grime of the Seattle sidewalk. Her hands shook violently as she stared from the photo to the boy’s face, then back to Caleb.

"No, that’s impossible,"
she whispered, her voice barely audible. Caleb looked up at her, his eyes wide with confusion.
"Mom, what does this mean?"
Laura could only gasp in terror, her mind racing back to the day she gave birth eight years ago. She had been told one of her twins hadn't survived. But the boy sitting in front of her was living, breathing proof of a monstrous lie.
