The cold autumn rain of Seattle beat relentlessly against the windowpane of the master bedroom, mirroring the storm brewing inside Chloe’s chest. She stood at the foot of her own bed, her red hair tied up in a high, hasty bun, her breath coming in ragged gasps. She was still wearing the black lace camisole she had slipped on under her travel sweater, a contrast to the pale lavender slip worn by the woman currently sitting under her sheets.

That woman was Sarah, her childhood best friend.

Only moments ago, Chloe had walked through the front door of her suburban home, eager to surprise her husband, Mark, after her design conference in Portland was cut short. Instead, she had found a quiet house, a pair of designer high heels on the stairs that did not belong to her, and a half-closed bedroom door. When she pushed it open, her world fractured.

Now, the silence in the room was suffocating. Sarah sat in the bed, her dirty blonde hair falling over her shoulders, her expression devoid of any shame. The sheer audacity of her presence in Chloe's sanctuary was like a physical blow.

Chloe’s vision blurred with tears of shock, but as she stared at her best friend, the sorrow instantly crystallized into a burning, white-hot fury. Veins showed in her neck as she stepped forward, her hands shaking violently.

With a sudden, violent motion, Chloe grabbed the edge of the pristine white duvet. She yanked it off the bed with all her might, throwing it to the floor.

"Get out!" Chloe screamed, her voice cracking under the weight of her agony. "Get out of my house!"

The scream echoed off the walls, but Sarah did not flinch. She slowly sat up, her eyes cold and calculating as she looked at Chloe standing there in her black underwear, trembling with rage.

"You're home early, Chloe," Sarah said, her voice smooth, chillingly calm. "But honestly, it’s better this way. We need to talk."
