A Tense Confrontation in Oakridge

The bell above the door of the Oakridge Diner chimed, breaking the quiet afternoon hum of clinking silverware and low murmurs. Sergeant Jessica Vance sat in the corner booth, her posture straight despite the exhaustion clinging to her bones. Under the table, resting his heavy chin on his paws, was Jax. The German Shepherd K9 was her shadow, her protector, and her closest friend. Together, they had survived three tours of duty, but transitioning back to civilian life in a small, unfamiliar town was proving to be a different kind of minefield.

Jessica was just raising a mug of black coffee to her lips when a shadow fell over her table. She looked up to see Deputy Michael, a local officer whose reputation for intimidation had preceded him. With his chest puffed out and his hand resting heavy on his utility belt, he oozed a toxic authority. Without warning, Michael reached down and roughly patted Jax on the head, deliberately trying to provoke a reaction from the highly trained military dog.

"You're in my town now," Michael sneered, his voice dripping with condescension. "Keep that mutt in line, or I will."

Jax didn't growl—he was too well-trained for that—but his muscles tensed beneath his harness, his eyes locked onto Jessica, waiting for a command. Jessica’s blood ran cold. The diner went dead silent as she slowly slid out of the vinyl booth. Standing at her full height in her military camouflage, she stepped directly into Michael’s personal space, refusing to back down.

"Touch my K9 again, Sheriff, and your badge won't survive the footage," Jessica said, her voice a deadly, quiet whisper.

Michael’s face flushed a deep, angry crimson. Stunned by her defiance, he took a half-step back, his fingers twitching near his holster as the diner patrons held their breath.
