Michael sneered, trying to regain his composure as the onlookers stared. "You think those fatigues make you untouchable?" he hissed, stepping closer. "Around here, I am the law. I can have this beast declared a public hazard and put down by sunset. You don't know who you're messing with, girl."

"Mr. Mayor," Michael stammered, his voice suddenly sounding thin and weak. "I... I was just performing a routine safety check. This animal—"

"This animal is a decorated military hero, and this young woman has served her country with more honor than you will ever understand," Mayor Thomas interrupted, his voice cutting through the diner like a knife. He held up his smartphone, showing a live recording screen. "I saw everything, Michael. I saw you provoke the dog, and I heard you threaten a citizen. I've been receiving complaints about your abuse of power for months, but today, you caught yourself on camera."

Desperate and cornered, Michael leaned in, trying to lower his voice. "Thomas, you don't want to do this. If this video gets out, I'll make sure everyone finds out about my son's little incident last month. We had a deal." It was a blatant attempt at blackmail, and Jessica felt her chest tighten as she realized how deep the corruption ran in this small town.
