The Kitchen Maid

The music from the grand living room drifted into the hallway, a soft blend of jazz and laughter that marked Nicholas’s recent promotion to senior partner. It was supposed to be a night of celebration, a gathering of the city’s elite in his newly purchased upscale suburban home. Yet, amidst the clinking of champagne glasses, Nicholas noticed a glaring absence. Ashley, his beautiful fiancée and the mother of his two-year-old daughter, Lily, was nowhere to be found.

Nicholas excused himself from a conversation with his boss and walked toward the back of the house. As he approached the bright, state-of-the-art kitchen, the joyful noise of the party faded, replaced by the harsh sound of running water and a sharp, familiar voice. He pushed the heavy oak door open and froze.

Ashley was standing at the sink, her eyes red and puffy, tears streaming down her pale cheeks as she frantically scrubbed a mountain of crystal glasses. Tied around her elegant silk dress was a cheap, grey canvas apron. Standing just a few feet away, sipping white wine in a flawless silver lace dress, was his mother, Margaret.

"What's going on here?" Nicholas asked, his voice trembling with a mixture of confusion and rising anger.

Margaret scoffed dismissively, not even turning to face him.

"Don't be so dramatic, Nicholas. She just wanted to feel useful. A girl like her isn't used to these kinds of parties anyway."

Nicholas ignored his mother and stepped up to Ashley. He gently took the sponge from her hand and reached behind her back to untie the apron, tossing it onto the marble countertop.

"Look at me, Ashley," he whispered, lifting her chin. "Did you really want to wash dishes during our celebration?"

Ashley looked up, her voice cracking as a fresh wave of sobs broke through.

"No... she told me that my place was in the kitchen because I'm just the mother of your daughter, not a real member of this family."

A cold rage washed over Nicholas. He turned to Margaret, his finger pointing directly at the door.

"My party is over. Get out of my house. Now."

Get out of my house. Now."
