The hum of the overhead fluorescent lights in the tiered military amphitheater was the only constant sound in the packed briefing room. Rows of seated airmen, clad in identical olive-drab flight gear, murmured quietly as they waited for the high-stakes briefing of Mission Apex to begin. The atmosphere was charged with a heavy, restless energy that made the hair on the back of my neck stand up. Everyone knew this mission was critical.

Standing near the front aisle was Lieutenant Carter. At thirty-five, with a sharp jawline and short brown hair, he carried himself with the supreme, unearned confidence of a man who believed the skies belonged to him alone. When the heavy doors opened and Jessica walked in, his eyes locked onto her immediately.

Jessica, a twenty-six-year-old pilot with her light brown hair pulled back into a neat, regulation ponytail, held her mission folder tightly against her chest. She scanned the room for a seat, but before she could find one, Carter stepped into her path.

He pointed a finger directly at her face, a mocking sneer curling his lips.

"Wrong room, sweetie," Carter yelled, his voice easily carrying over the low chatter of the room. "This briefing is for real pilots."

A few of Carter’s closest allies chuckled, while others shifted uncomfortably in their seats. Carter threw his head back, letting out a loud, arrogant laugh that echoed off the concrete walls.

Jessica didn’t flinch. She stood perfectly still, her expression remaining entirely calm and unmoved. She looked at him with cool, piercing eyes.

"Are you finished, Lieutenant?" she asked, her voice steady and quiet, yet somehow cutting through his laughter.

Carter’s smirk faltered for a fraction of a second, annoyed by her lack of fear. He stepped closer, leaning down slightly to look her in the eye.

"Go fetch coffee before the real mission starts," he sneered, waving his hand dismissively.

The room held its collective breath, waiting to see how the young woman would react to such blatant humiliation.
