A Fairytale Ruined

The crystal chandeliers of the Grand Belmont Ballroom cast a warm, golden glow over hundreds of high-society guests. For Sarah, however, the light felt blinding and oppressive. She stood at the altar, her breathing shallow beneath the tight wedding corset of her designer strapless gown. She was minutes away from marrying Arthur Vance, the wealthy heir to a real estate dynasty. To Arthur’s family, Sarah was just a simple ranch girl from Wyoming, a charity case they had reluctantly allowed into their polished world.

To appease his mother’s taste for dramatic flair, the wedding featured a grand procession of purebred black horses. But the grand ballroom, filled with the echo of classical violinists and flashing cameras, was no place for high-strung animals. Suddenly, the lead stallion panicked. It reared up, its iron shoes clattering violently against the marble floor. The crowd erupted into screams.

Instinctively, Sarah stepped forward, her years on the ranch telling her how to calm a frightened horse. But Arthur did not share her courage. Terrified of the beast, Arthur reacted blindly. He shoved Sarah out of the way to shield himself. Sarah stumbled backward, losing her footing on the slick marble, and crashed directly into a massive, waterlogged decorative mud planter lining the aisle.

The impact was deafening. When the dust settled, Sarah sat in the wet dirt, her pristine white gown soaked in thick, black mud. The ballroom fell into a suffocating silence. Gasping for air, Sarah looked up at her fiancé, expecting comfort. Instead, Arthur sneered, brushing a speck of dust off his tuxedo.

"Look at you," Arthur hissed, loud enough for the front rows to hear. "You've ruined the most important night of my family's social calendar. You're nothing but a clumsy peasant."

As the guests began to whisper and snicker, Sarah’s heart shattered. But then, she caught sight of a familiar figure. Leaning casually against a marble pillar was Luke, her childhood sweetheart and her father’s loyal ranch hand. He was wearing his worn denim and dusty boots, completely out of place. And he was smirking. The humiliation turned into white-hot rage. Sarah threw her hands in the air and screamed in wild frustration,

"I am done!"
