The Desert Challenge

The heat of the Mojave Desert was oppressive, rising in shimmering waves from the parched earth. Under the modest shade of a wooden shed, Lauren stood by a weathered workstation, her fingers tracing the worn edges of her teal hoodie. She looked out at the firing range, her heart hammering against her ribs, though her face remained a mask of absolute calm. Beside her stood Chris, a veteran instructor clad in sand-colored camouflage gear, a low-profile tactical cap, and dark sunglasses that shielded his eyes from the blinding glare.

Chris adjusted his holster, looking Lauren up and down with a skeptical squint. To him, she looked like an amateur—a woman who had wandered into the high-stakes range on a whim. He pointed toward the targets swinging in the dry breeze downrange.

"Seven shots,"
Chris said, his voice carrying a sharp, challenging edge.
"Show us you belong on this firing line."

Without a word, Lauren reached into the heavy case on the table. Her hands were steady as she lifted the heavy bolt-action rifle. It was a serious weapon, built for precision and devastating power. Chris watched her closely, crossing his arms.

"Careful, that rifle kicks harder than it looks,"
he warned, a hint of amusement in his tone.
"Right in the center, if you can find it."

The spectators behind them whispered, expecting a spectacular failure. Lauren ignored them. She shouldered the rifle, her cheek pressed against the cold stock, and took a deep breath. She squeezed the trigger. The deafening report echoed across the canyon, and a spinning metal target downrange shattered instantly. Chris gasped, pulling down his sunglasses.

"Did she hit both?"
he muttered, stunned. Lauren calmly cycled the bolt, ejecting the spent casing.
"You gave me seven shots,"
she replied coolly, aiming once more.
