My Stepmother Locked My Father in a Casket While He Was Still Breathing
The Sealed Mahogany Casket
The air inside the somber living room was thick with the scent of lilies and candle wax. Soft, ambient light cast long shadows across the bookshelves, transforming the familiar family home into a cold, unfamiliar mausoleum. Standing beside the heavy, closed mahogany casket was Maria. Dressed in a sleek black satin gown, her curly auburn hair perfectly coiffed, she looked like the picture of a grieving widow. Yet, her eyes remained dry, darting nervously toward the front doors.
Suddenly, the heavy oak doors burst open. Leo, her stepson, stumbled into the room, his navy suit disheveled and his dark brown hair messy from travel. Tears streamed down his face as he cried out,
"Dad! Dad! Please tell me this isn't real!"
Leo collapsed onto the lid of the casket, his hands gripping the polished wood as his body wracked with heavy, breathless sobs.
"When did all this happen, Maria? I was only gone for a week! I want to see my father one last time. Open it, please!"
Maria’s face paled. She lunged forward, her fingers digging tightly into Leo’s shoulders as she pulled him back. Her voice was a frantic, trembling whisper.
"No, you can't! It can't be opened, Leo. Your father had a disease. A very rare, highly contagious disease. The medical examiner ordered it sealed immediately for everyone's safety."
But beneath the heavy lid, in the absolute darkness of the velvet-lined box, there was no disease. Arthur, Leo’s father, lay bound and gagged. Heavy duct tape sealed his lips, and tight zip-ties cut into his wrists. He could hear his son’s desperate cries echoing through the wood. Arthur’s chest heaved with panic, his eyes wide with terror as he thrashed uselessly against his satin prison, praying his son would hear his muffled struggle.
