The Instructor Mocked Her Skills, but Her Perfect Aim Revealed a Hidden Past
The desert sun beat down mercilessly on the dusty gravel of the outdoor shooting range, baking the rustic wooden shelter until the air smelled of dry pine and cordite. Clara adjusted the collar of her grey zip-up jacket, trying to ignore the nervous flutter in her chest. She had spent two years running, hiding in the shadows of a life she no longer recognized. But today, she needed to know if she still had the edge. She needed to know if she could protect herself when the inevitable day arrived.
A Test of Fire
Standing beside her was Jack, a seasoned instructor clad in tactical tan gear, his eyes hidden behind dark sunglasses. He looked at Clara with the weary skepticism of a man who had seen too many tourists try to play hero. Behind them, a few spectators gathered, whispering and chuckling as Clara opened her heavy, weathered rifle case.

"Seven shots," Jack said, his voice gravelly and unimpressed. "Show us you belong on this firing line."
Clara didn't answer. She lifted the heavy bolt-action rifle, her hands instantly remembering the balance, the cold metal, the absolute authority of the weapon. Jack watched her closely, leaning against the wooden table.
"Careful, that rifle kicks harder than it looks," Jack warned, a smirk playing on his lips. "Right in the center, if you can find it."
Clara closed her eyes for a single second, letting the desert wind wash over her. She thought of her daughter, Lily, snatched away by her corrupt ex-husband. She thought of the fear that had dictated her life for twenty-four months. She opened her eyes, raised the rifle, and aligned the sights with the spinning metal target downrange. Bang. The steel target spun violently, echoing across the canyon. Bang. Another hit, dead center. Jack's jaw dropped as he stared through his binoculars.
"Did she hit both?" he whispered, stunned.
Clara calmly cycled the bolt, the brass casing glinting in the sun. "You gave me seven shots," she said softly, before firing again.
