A Confrontation in the Dust

The desert sun was merciless, beating down on the cracked earth of the shooting range. Thomas, a rugged veteran of sixty-seven, walked with a steady, slow gait toward the registration counter. His cropped grey hair and dark brown canvas jacket bore the dust of a long journey, but his eyes remained sharp as flint. To the young men whispering nearby, he looked like a relic of a forgotten era—a man whose time had long since passed.

Among those men was Leo, a twenty-nine-year-old soldier clad in a pristine black tactical shirt. Leo watched Thomas approach with a smug, mocking smile. To Leo, the old man was nothing more than an easy target for his arrogance. Standing with his hands on his hips, Leo raised his voice so everyone could hear.

"Are you here to compete? Or to beg for alms?"

A few of Leo’s companions chuckled, shaking their heads. Thomas didn't flinch. He slowly rolled up his right sleeve, revealing a weathered forearm. Etched into the aged skin was a striking, faded black wolf tattoo. Leo glanced at it, but his arrogance blinded him. He simply folded his arms and laughed dismissively, assuming it was just a cheap souvenir from some long-forgotten enlistment.

Without a word, Thomas walked to the firing line. He hoisted his heavy, scoped rifle, a weapon that felt like an extension of his own body. He didn't waste time aiming or adjusting his stance. He took a single, calm breath, pulled the trigger, and let the rifle roar once. The bullet tore through the air, striking the absolute center of the furthest target with a resounding metallic clang.

Thomas lowered the weapon and looked directly at the stunned young soldier.

"I only need one shot," Thomas said calmly.

Leo stood frozen, his mouth open. "What? Impossible!" he stammered, grabbing his binoculars. As he stared at the perfect bullseye, a tear of sudden, inexplicable realization rolled down his cheek. A deep voice from behind them broke the silence. An older range officer had stepped forward, staring intently at Thomas's arm. "That is the mark of the ghost unit," the officer whispered in awe.
