The rustic kitchen of the Miller household was filled with the warm, rich aroma of roasted chicken and garlic potatoes. To ten-year-old Leo, it smelled like heaven. He stood at the edge of the linoleum floor, shifting his weight from one foot to the other, his small hands clutching the hem of his faded red polo shirt. His stomach let out a quiet, painful growl. Across the room, his stepmother, Lorna, was busy plating the food for her own three children, her red hair tied back loosely.

A Cruel Rejection

Summoning all his courage, the young boy took a step forward.

"Mrs. Lorna, is there food for me too?"
his voice trembled slightly, filled with a child’s simple hope.

Lorna stopped what she was doing. She slowly turned around, her eyes narrowing as she glared at the boy. Clutching a serving spoon like a weapon, she snapped loudly.

"Don't call me just to ask for food. I cook for my children, not for strangers. If you're hungry, wait until your father gets home. You are not my responsibility."

Leo’s face fell, his eyes welling up with tears. He looked down at his worn-out sneakers, feeling the crushing weight of being an outsider in his own home. But before Lorna could turn back to the stove, the heavy oak front door clicked open. David, Leo’s father, walked into the kitchen. He was still wearing his navy blue business suit, but his tie was loosened, and his face was a mask of cold fury. He had heard every single word.

David stepped forward, his eyes locking onto his wife.

"Then your children shouldn't be eating either, 'cause I just found out that none of them are mine,"
he said, his voice deadly calm.

The kitchen fell into a suffocating silence. Lorna gasped, her eyes widening in absolute shock as the serving spoon slipped from her hand and clattered onto the counter.
