They Laughed at My Father's Old Umbrella Until I Fired the Ultimate Shot
The midday desert sun beat down mercilessly on the rustic wooden pavilion of the High Desert Tactical Range. Dust devils danced across the dry earth, and the smell of gunpowder hung heavy in the air. Rachel stood quietly by a heavy wooden table, her dark ponytail contrasting sharply with her charcoal hoodie. She looked out of place among the seasoned shooters in their expensive tactical gear, but her calm demeanor suggested otherwise.
A Strange Weapon
Ben, the range instructor, stood beside her. Clad in khaki tactical gear, a matching cap, and dark sunglasses, he exuded an aura of absolute authority. He looked at Rachel with a mixture of amusement and skepticism. He didn't believe she belonged here, let alone that she could handle the high-caliber challenges of his elite range.

"Seven shots. Show us you belong on this firing line," Ben said, his voice carrying over the wind.
Rachel didn't reply. Instead, she unzipped a long, weathered leather case resting on the table. From it, she lifted a bizarre device. It looked exactly like a heavy black umbrella, but it was fitted with a precision bolt-action mechanism and a reinforced steel barrel tip. The spectators chuckled, whispering among themselves at the ridiculous sight.
Ben smirked, crossing his arms over his chest.
"Careful, that umbrella kicks harder than it looks," he warned, his tone dripping with sarcasm. "Right in the center, if you can find it."
Without a word, Rachel lifted the heavy weapon, bracing the stock against her shoulder. She cycled the bolt with a sharp, metallic click that silenced the crowd. She took a breath, aimed at the spinning metal targets two hundred yards downrange, and pulled the trigger.
A deafening boom echoed under the pavilion. The recoil was massive, but Rachel held her ground. Downrange, the target disintegrated. Ben stared, his sunglasses slipping down his nose as he struggled to process what he had just witnessed.
"Did she hit both?" Ben stammered, looking at the empty target stand.
Rachel calmly cycled the bolt, ejecting a smoking brass shell casing onto the dusty floor.
"You gave me seven shots," she replied coldly.
Before anyone could speak, she raised the weapon and fired again, the second shot striking another distant target dead center as the crowd watched in stunned silence.
