The air inside the county correctional facility was thick with the smell of bleach and old despair. Sarah clutched her beige scrubs, the coarse fabric scratching against her collarbone as she was escorted down the narrow corridor. The walls, painted a peeling shade of institutional green and gray, seemed to close in on her with every step. Overhead, a harsh fluorescent bulb hummed a relentless, buzzing tune, casting a sick pallor over the cracked linoleum.

Through a high, barred window at the end of the hall, a sliver of natural light fought its way inside, illuminating the dust motes dancing in the heavy air. Sarah’s escort, a burly guard whose keys jingled mockingly with every stride, suddenly halted in front of Cell 412. The iron door slid open with a deafening metallic screech.

Sarah stepped inside, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird. Standing in the center of the cramped cell was Claire. Claire was a legend of silence in the block—a forty-five-year-old woman with a short, dark buzzcut and sharp, severe features that looked as though they had been carved from stone. She stood rigid, her hands flat against her sides, watching the newcomer with an unblinking, icy intensity.

For a second, Sarah couldn't breathe. The sheer weight of Claire's gaze felt like a physical pressure.

A Cold Welcome

‐You...‑

Sarah whispered, her voice barely a thread. The word was born of pure dread, a recognition of the formidable woman she would now have to share this tiny concrete tomb with.

Receiving no answer, Sarah’s gaze dropped to the floor. Her knees, weak from days of crying and sleeplessness, finally gave out. She leaned heavily against the cracked, cold wall of the cell, her breath coming in short, ragged gasps. Claire remained perfectly still, a silent sentinel of the dark, her unblinking eyes tracking Sarah’s every tremor as the cell door slammed shut behind them, sealing them into a suffocating silence.
