The kitchen was filled with the warm, rich aroma of garlic and roasted chicken. It was the kind of sensory experience that usually meant comfort and family. But seven-year-old Leo stood at the edge of the granite island, his small fingers gripping the hem of his red and white striped shirt, feeling like an outsider in his own home. He watched his stepmother, Lorna, carefully spooning generous portions of food onto two plates for her own children.

A Cold Rejection in the Kitchen

Gathering his courage, Leo took a small step forward.

“Mrs. Lorna, is there food for me too?”
he asked, his voice barely above a whisper. Lorna, wearing a pristine black apron, stopped what she was doing. She slowly turned around, her face instantly hardening into a mask of irritation. She didn't see a sweet, hungry child; she saw an inconvenience.

“Don't call me just to ask for food,”
she snapped, her voice cutting through the warm air like ice.
“I cook for my children, not for strangers. If you're hungry, wait until your father gets home. You are not my responsibility.”

Leo’s face fell, his eyes pooling with unshed tears. He took a step back, looking utterly defeated. He was used to her cold shoulder, but being called a “stranger” in the house he had lived in for three years pierced his young heart. But before Lorna could turn back to her cooking, a shadow fell over the kitchen doorway. Mark, Leo’s father, stood there. He was still dressed in his dark blue work suit, his expression grim and his jaw clenched tightly. He stepped into the light, his eyes burning with a mixture of intense anger and profound sadness.

“Then your children shouldn't be eating either,”
Mark said, his voice deadly calm,
“'cause I just found out that none of them are mine.”

Lorna froze. The serving spoon slipped from her hand, clattering against the granite countertop. She whirled around, her face draining of color, her eyes wide with sheer shock. The silence in the kitchen became absolute, heavy with the weight of a secret that had just been shattered.
