Marcus had spent the last three years in absolute isolation, deep in the rugged heart of the Alaskan wilderness. He had fled the betrayal of a civilized world that had stripped him of his dignity and his life savings. On this particular morning, the air was a brutal negative twenty degrees. A thick, ghostly fog hung over the vast frozen lake that bordered his cabin. Marcus was out checking his perimeter lines when a sound broke the silence—a sharp, desperate whimpering.

Following the sound, Marcus ran onto the ice. In the middle of the lake, a jagged hole yawned open, filled with black, freezing water. Inside it, a silver-gray wolf was fighting a losing battle. Her claws slipped frantically against the slick ice as she struggled to keep her head above water.

A Desperate Rescue

Instead, the pack gathered around the shivering female, looked at Marcus with what seemed like profound gratitude, and then melted back into the forest.
