Previously: When Marcus risked his life to pull a drowning wolf from a frozen lake, he thought he was just doing the right thing. He had no idea the pack would follow him home.

Shivering violently, his dark-green winter parka stiff with frost, Marcus dragged himself back to his cabin. He needed dry clothes and a roaring fire immediately to stave off hypothermia. But as he pushed the heavy oak door open, the smell of woodsmoke was accompanied by an unwelcome scent of expensive cologne.

Standing by his fireplace was Thomas, his former business partner—the man who had embezzled millions from their firm, framed Marcus, and forced him into this self-imposed exile. Behind Thomas stood two burly, silent men in heavy tactical gear.

"You always did have a soft spot for strays, Marcus," Thomas sneered, gesturing to Marcus’s frozen state. "But your hiding days are over."

Thomas threw a stack of legal documents onto the heavy wooden table. It was a deed transfer for Marcus’s family land—the last remaining asset Thomas hadn't been able to steal.

Face to Face with Betrayal

"Sign the land over to me, and we leave you in peace," Thomas said, pulling a sleek hunting rifle from his shoulder. "Refuse, and this frozen wilderness becomes your permanent grave. No one will ever find you."

Marcus looked at the man who had ruined his life. Anger, hot and fierce, surged through his veins, temporarily masking the biting cold.

"I’d rather die out here than give you another dime, Thomas," Marcus spat.

Thomas’s face darkened. He nodded to his men. The two thugs seized Marcus, pinning his arms behind his back and slamming him onto the cold floor. Thomas stepped forward, aiming the rifle directly at Marcus’s chest. The metallic click of the safety being disengaged echoed loudly in the small cabin. Marcus closed his eyes, preparing for the end. But before Thomas could pull the trigger, a terrifying sound shattered the tension. A low, thunderous growl vibrated through the floorboards.
