The biting autumn wind swept through the city streets, but the chill in Natalie’s bones had nothing to do with the weather. At eight months pregnant, she felt entirely abandoned by the world. Her tattered grey sweater offered little protection against the elements, and her stomach rumbled with a deep, painful hunger. Only a week prior, her husband, Richard, had ruthlessly cast her out of their home after his wealthy family demanded he choose between his inheritance and his "penniless" wife. Exhausted and weak, she collapsed onto a metal chair outside a local fast-food restaurant. The rich scent of fried food made her mouth water.
