The Intruder in the Kitchen

The kitchen of L’Etoile was a pressure cooker of stress. Copper pans clattered against stainless steel, orders barked from the pass, and the heat from the open grills was suffocating. Chef Edward stood over his presentation counter, his brow furrowed in deep frustration. Tonight was the night. Arthur Pendelton, the city’s most ruthless food critic, was arriving in less than an hour. A single mediocre plate could destroy Edward’s already crumbling culinary empire.

Edward rubbed his temples, staring at the pan-seared scallops he had just plated. They looked beautiful, but deep down, he knew the flavor was flat. He had lost his passion years ago, and his menu had become a tired echo of his past success. He turned away to grab a clean towel, but when he turned back, a stranger was standing at his station.

It was a young man, barely twenty years old, wearing a simple white chef's jacket. He held a small squeeze bottle, carefully drizzling a rich, dark reduction over Edward’s scallop dish with the precision of a seasoned artist.

"Hey! What are you doing?" Edward shouted, his voice cutting through the kitchen's roar.

The young man didn’t flinch. He slowly finished the drizzle before looking up. Edward marched over, his face flushed with anger, ready to throw the intruder out of his restaurant. But as he drew closer, the rich aroma of caramelized blackberries, star anise, and toasted coriander hit his nose. It was a smell he hadn't encountered in over two decades—a scent that belonged to a ghost.

Edward’s anger evaporated, replaced by a sudden, chilling confusion.

"Wait... Who are you?" Edward gasped.

The young man set the bottle down, maintaining a perfectly calm demeanor.

"I'm improving your dish," he said quietly.
