Previously: When a young stranger alters Chef Edward’s signature dish before a crucial critic's visit, a dark secret from the past threatens to destroy his entire culinary empire.

The Ghost of a Betrayal

Edward stared at the young intruder, his heart hammering against his ribs. Trembling, he reached for a clean tasting spoon. He scooped up a piece of the scallop, swirled it in the dark reduction, and placed it in his mouth. The explosion of flavors was immediate. It was sweet, complex, and perfectly balanced. It was a culinary masterpiece—and it belonged to a man Edward had spent twenty years trying to forget.

"Where did you get this recipe?" Edward whispered, his voice cracking. "Who taught you how to make this?"

The young man pulled off his chef’s cap, revealing messy brown hair and eyes that held an intense, painful familiarity.

"My name is Dylan," he said softly. "Dylan Vance. Marcus Vance was my father."

The name hit Edward like a physical blow. Twenty years ago, Marcus Vance was the city’s premier chef, and Edward had been his eager apprentice. Marcus had treated Edward like a son, sharing his lifelong recipe journals. But driven by greed, Edward had stolen those journals, patented the signature sauces under his own name, and secured a wealthy investor. Marcus was ruined, ending up in bankruptcy, while Edward became a superstar. Marcus had passed away only a month ago, penniless and forgotten.

Just then, the sous chef rushed up, his face pale. "Chef! Arthur Pendelton is here. He just ordered the scallops. We need them now!"

Edward looked at Dylan, panic rising in his chest. He was trapped. He could not cook a dish worthy of Pendelton on his own. He was a fraud, and tonight was his judgment day.

"What do you want, Dylan?" Edward pleaded. "Did you come to expose me?"

Dylan pulled a faded, leather-bound notebook from his bag—Marcus’s original journal.

"My father didn't want revenge, Edward. He wanted his legacy protected," Dylan said. "I will help you cook tonight's service. We will save this restaurant together.
