The cold autumn wind swept across the desolate state border, kicking up clouds of fine gray dust that settled on the old wooden barrier. At dusk, the checkpoint felt like the edge of the world, painted in warm, desaturated tones of orange and gray. Officer Robert stood tall in his dark navy patrol uniform, his thick leather gloves gripping his belt. He had watched this stretch of road for a decade, but lately, his attention had been fixed on one recurring traveler.

Margaret, an elderly woman with a weathered face framed by a simple checkered headscarf, approached the barrier. She was pushing a heavy, vintage black bicycle. Draped over the rear rack was a bulgy, coarse burlap sack.

Robert stepped forward, his boots crunching on the gravel. He eyed the heavy sack suspiciously.

The Weekly Routine

"What's in there, Margaret?" he asked, his voice deep and steady.

Margaret offered a tight, nervous smile, her hands trembling slightly on the handlebars. "Just grain for my sister's chickens across the line, Officer. Same as last week."

Without a word, Robert reached out. His gloved hand unknotted the twine at the top of the sack. He plunged his hand deep into the coarse material, scooping up a handful of golden grain. He let the wheat spill slowly back through his fingers, watching it closely for any hidden glint of metal or glass.

Margaret held her breath, her worried eyes locked onto his gloved hand. The tension in the air was thick enough to cut with a knife.

Robert patted the sack closed, wiping the dust from his gloves. He looked at her tired, anxious face for a long moment.

"Alright," he said softly. "Go ahead."

He walked over to the lever and lifted the heavy wooden gate. Margaret nodded in silent gratitude, her shoulders sinking with relief. Robert stood by the barrier, his eyes fixed on her back as she pushed the heavy bicycle down the silent, empty dirt road, disappearing into the gathering darkness.
