The Legend in the Dust

The desert sun beat down mercilessly on the firing range, baking the dry earth until the air shimmered with heat. Sixty-six-year-old Arthur walked with a steady, unhurried pace toward the check-in counter. Dressed in a faded beige canvas jacket and worn boots, he looked like a man who had long retired from the world of active service. His thinning grey hair blew slightly in the hot wind, but his eyes remained sharp as flint, scanning the horizon with a familiarity born of decades in the field.

At the registration desk stood Lieutenant Leo, a thirty-four-year-old soldier clad in pristine black tactical gear. Leo exuded the smug arrogance of youth and privilege. He looked Arthur up and down, a mocking smile spreading across his face.

"Are you here to compete? Or to beg for alms?"
Leo asked, his voice dripping with condescension. The younger soldiers nearby chuckled, amused by their superior's cruelty.

Arthur did not flinch. He reached out his arm to sign the registration ledger, and as he did, his sleeve pulled back. Revealed on his weathered forearm was a striking black wolf tattoo. The laughter in the camp died instantly. Leo’s eyes widened, his posture stiffening as his breath caught in his throat. He recognized the symbol immediately; it was the mark of the Ghost Unit, a legendary, classified squad of elite snipers rumored to have executed impossible missions in silence.

Dismissing his sudden fear, Leo tried to laugh it off, folding his arms defensively. Arthur simply picked up a heavy, scoped rifle. He adjusted his stance, ignoring the whispers.

"I only need one shot,"
he murmured calmly. He pulled the trigger. A single, thunderous crack echoed across the desert. Hundreds of yards away, the target was obliterated perfectly in the dead center. Leo stared in absolute disbelief, a single tear of shock rolling down his cheek as he whispered, "What? Impossible!"
