The Golden Cage

The headlights of the SUV cut through the thick, swirling fog of the upstate New York forest, illuminating the decaying iron gates of Blackwood Manor. Clara Vance clutched her coat tighter around her shoulders, a sudden chill settling deep in her bones. Beside her, her husband, Julian, offered a reassuring smile that didn't quite reach his eyes. "It's just for the weekend, Clara," he murmured, his voice smooth and comforting. "A chance to reconnect, and to finally see the estate your grandfather left behind."

"Julian, it's freezing in here," Clara whispered, her voice echoing into the vast emptiness. "Maybe we should find a hotel instead."

She turned to look for him, but the space beside her was empty. Before she could call his name, a violent gust of wind howled through the foyer. With a deafening crash that reverberated through the entire house, the heavy front doors slammed shut. Clara rushed to the entrance, throwing her weight against the iron-reinforced wood. It was locked tight. From the darkness of the second-floor balcony, a low, chilling whisper seemed to drift down through the swaying chandelier: "...no one ever escapes this house... once you step inside."
