The autumn chill clung to the air as Clara pushed her heavy wooden pastry cart down the slick, wet cobblestones of the narrow alleyway. At sixty-seven, her joints ached with every step, and her faded utility apron was stained with flour and decades of quiet sorrow. For thirty years, she had survived by selling her handmade pastries, but today, her hands trembled more than usual. A strange, inexplicable pull had drawn her to this specific corner of the city.

As a wealthy couple approached, Clara's breath caught in her throat. The man was tall and handsome, wearing a tailored black coat that spoke of immense wealth. Beside him, a beautiful woman in a cream trench coat walked with an air of impatient elegance. But Clara couldn't look away from the man's eyes. They were the exact shade of deep, slate blue that she had dreamed of every night for three decades.

In her sudden nervousness, Clara’s grip slipped, and a freshly baked croissant tumbled onto the wet ground. She gasped, quickly wrapping another warm, golden pastry in parchment paper. Stepping forward, she softly pleaded,

"Please, try it."

The woman, Sarah, sighed and checked her watch, but the man paused. Something in Clara’s desperate gaze anchored him to the spot. Thomas took the pastry and took a small bite.

Instantly, his expression froze. His eyes widened, and a sudden, overwhelming wave of recognition washed over his face. He murmured,

"That flavor... I know this flavor."

With tears already welling in her eyes, Clara reached into her apron pocket and pulled out a tattered, black-and-white photograph. It showed a young, radiant Clara standing beside her pastry cart, cradling a tiny infant. She handed it to him, her voice barely a whisper.

"I used to make them for you."

Thomas stared at the image, his hands shaking violently. He looked from the baby in the photo to the fragile older woman standing before him.

"That child is me,"
he whispered in absolute shock.

Tears streamed down Clara's lined face as she looked up at her grown son.

"I never abandoned you,"
she sobbed. A single, heavy tear fell from Thomas's cheek, landing directly on the old paper, blurring the image of the mother and child.
