The autumn sun beat down on the busy city sidewalk, but to Louis, the warmth felt miles away. Clad in his faded green military jacket and a matching camo cap, the weathered veteran leaned against the cold brick wall of the municipal building. In his calloused hand, he lightly tossed a gold challenge coin—a token of appreciation from a life he had left behind decades ago. It was the only thing of value he had left after a sudden bureaucratic error had frozen his monthly pension checks.

A Cruel Confrontation

Suddenly, the heavy glass doors of the office building swung open, and out stepped Raymond. Dressed in a sharp tan suit that screamed corporate arrogance, the young bureaucrat clutched a thick leather clipboard. He spotted Louis, and a smug sneer spread across his face. Raymond had been the one to sign the suspension order on Louis’s files, and he clearly relished the power he held over the old man.

"Still lingering around, old man?" Raymond mocked, stepping directly into Louis's personal space. "I told you inside, your paperwork is gone. There's nothing more for you here."

Before Louis could answer, Raymond shoved him hard against the brick wall. The sudden impact knocked the gold coin from Louis's grasp. It clinked sharply against the concrete, rolling toward the curb until a polished black dress shoe stopped right beside it. Raymond sneered, looking down at the coin and then back at Louis. "Your pension has disappeared, old man. Someone like you no longer needs documents," he whispered maliciously.

Louis didn't flinch. Instead, a calm, knowing smile crept onto his weathered face. He looked past Raymond’s shoulder, toward the busy street. "Son, you'd better look toward the road," Louis said softly.

Before Raymond could laugh, the roar of powerful engines drowned out the city noise. Three massive, blacked-out SUVs pulled up to the curb, blocking the lane. The doors flew open, and out stepped General Sterling, an imposing, older officer in a highly decorated dark blue dress uniform. His eyes locked onto Raymond, and his voice boomed across the sidewalk: "Pick it up."
