Amelia Vance knelt on the cold, rain-soaked pavement of 5th Avenue, her emerald green blazer absorbing the damp chill of the city. Behind her, a line of solemn men in black suits stood like statues, shielding her from the curious stares of passersby. She held out a dark purple velvet box. Inside, a flawless five-carat diamond ring caught the dim streetlights, glowing with an almost ethereal light. Before her sat Caleb, a man who looked like he had been chewed up and spat out by the city. His dark hair was matted with grime, his jaw covered in rough stubble, and deep, faded scars ran across his cheek. He looked up from his spot on the curb, his eyes hollow with exhaustion.

"Marry me," Amelia pleaded, her voice trembling but resolute.

Caleb stared at the sparkling ring, then up at the beautiful woman kneeling before him. He looked bewildered, his cracked lips parting as he spoke.

"Why me?" he rasped.

A single tear escaped Amelia’s designer sunglasses, tracing a path through the light rain on her face. She whispered, leaning closer to him.

"Please, only you can help me."

As Caleb’s dirty fingers tentatively reached out to touch the cold metal of the ring, the heavy silence was shattered. A black luxury SUV splashed violently through a puddle, screeching to a halt at the curb.

"Amelia, stop!" a commanding, furious voice boomed from the vehicle.

Caleb’s eyes widened in sudden, jarring shock. He stared at the man stepping out of the SUV, his breath hitching.

"This name..." he muttered, his mind spinning.
"Don't let him remember!" the older man yelled, pointing a trembling finger at Caleb.

Caleb stood up, clutching the velvet box to his chest, and screamed in sudden, primal terror.
