A Proposal in the Rain

The rain fell in relentless sheets, washing over the cold pavement of the city's theater district. Amelia Vance adjusted her dark sunglasses, though the sun had long since dipped below the horizon. The dark lenses weren't for the light; they were a shield against the prying eyes of the men who had been tailing her for three blocks. She could see them now, a row of imposing figures in matching black suits standing silently under the awning of a closed storefront, watching her every move.

Amelia took a deep breath, her heart hammering against her ribs, and stepped toward the curb. There, sitting on the wet concrete, was a man who looked like a ghost from her past. Marcus Thorne, once her father’s most trusted head of security, was barely recognizable. His face was weathered and scarred, his frame thin beneath a tattered jacket, and a scruffy brown beard covered his jaw. He looked entirely defeated by the world.

Without hesitation, Amelia knelt on the rain-slicked pavement in front of him. She reached into her navy blue trench coat and pulled out a small, dark velvet box. Opening it, she revealed a glittering diamond ring that caught the amber glow of the streetlights.

"Marry me,"
she pleaded, her voice cracking with raw emotion.

Marcus slowly raised his head, his eyes vacant and bloodshot. He stared at the sparkling jewel, then at the elegant woman kneeling before him in the dirt.

"Why me?"
he rasped, his voice sounding like dry autumn leaves scraping across concrete.

A single tear slipped from beneath Amelia’s sunglasses, tracing a path down her pale cheek.

"Please, only you can help me,"
she whispered, her hands shaking as she urged him to take the box.

Just as Marcus’s grime-stained fingers brushed the cold metal of the ring, a black sedan splashed violently through a nearby puddle. An off-screen voice, cold and authoritative, boomed through the misty air:

"Amelia, stop!"

Marcus froze. His eyes dilated, staring intensely at the ring as a flood of fractured memories surged behind his eyelids.

"This name..."
he muttered, his voice suddenly shifting from confusion to absolute panic.
"Amelia..."

"Don't let him remember!"
the voice bellowed again. Marcus leaped to his feet, clutching the box to his chest, and screamed in sheer terror before vanishing into the shadows of the alley.
