The Fall from Grace

The grand banquet hall of the Sterling Estate was a vision of opulence. Hundreds of crystal chandeliers hung from the vaulted ceilings, casting a warm, golden glow over the two hundred guests who had gathered to celebrate the union of Ashley and Christopher. Ashley, a radiant young redhead, looked breathtaking in her sweetheart gown. But beneath the layers of silk and lace, her heart was heavy. She had spent the last few hours pretending everything was perfect, hiding the dark truth she had uncovered just before walking down the aisle.

As the reception got underway, Ashley sat at the head table. Suddenly, the wooden leg of her ornate chair snapped with a sharp crack. With no time to react, Ashley fell backward, crashing hard onto the polished marble floor. The impact echoed through the silent hall, and her beautiful gown crumpled around her in a disarray of white fabric.

Instead of rushing to help his new bride, Christopher, sharp in his charcoal suit, let out a loud chuckle. He leaned back, raising his champagne glass.

"Wow, too slow,"
he said, his voice dripping with amusement. The guests, taking their cue from the groom, began to snicker and whisper.

Standing nearby was Patricia, Christopher’s mother. Dressed in a dark, elegant gown and holding a half-empty wine glass, she sneered down at Ashley.

"What a shame. She doesn't even know how to sit properly,"
she murmured, loud enough for everyone to hear. Ashley wiped a tear from her cheek, but it wasn't from pain. It was the final realization that these people were monsters.

Slowly, Ashley slid her massive diamond engagement ring off her finger and dropped it onto the table. It landed with a heavy clink. At that exact moment, the grand double doors of the hall swung open. A tall man in a navy suit, carrying a leather briefcase, stepped inside. Ashley looked up from the floor, a cold smile touching her lips.

"My lawyer is already here,"
she whispered.
