Thomas and Sarah walked down the wet, historic cobblestone streets of the city. The light drizzle of a late autumn afternoon cast a silver sheen over the brick buildings. Sarah, elegant in her classic khaki trench coat, complained about the damp weather ruining her hair. Thomas, dressed in a sharp dark grey suit, held the umbrella over her, his mind preoccupied with upcoming corporate mergers.

Suddenly, their path was blocked by a humble wooden pastry cart. An elderly woman, her grey hair pulled back in a low ponytail, was struggling to push the heavy cart over the slippery stones. She wore a faded plaid shawl over a flour-dusted apron. As the cart jolted, a freshly baked croissant slipped from her tongs and fell onto the wet ground.

"Ugh, how clumsy," Sarah muttered, pulling Thomas back. "Let's go around, Thomas. This street is becoming a hazard."

But the old woman, Clara, looked up. Her eyes, a striking, deep blue, locked onto Thomas. Trembling, she reached into her cart and wrapped a fresh, warm pastry in a piece of brown paper. She held it out to him with a pleading gaze.

"Please, try it," Clara whispered, her voice trembling.

"Thomas, don't be ridiculous. We have reservations at five," Sarah insisted.

Ignoring his fiancée, Thomas reached out and took the pastry. He took a bite. Instantly, a wave of intense nostalgia washed over him. The unique blend of orange blossom and rich butter was a flavor he hadn't tasted in thirty years—a flavor he thought only existed in his childhood dreams.

"That flavor..." Thomas murmured, his eyes wide with sudden recognition.

Clara smiled through her tears. With shaking hands, she pulled a tattered, water-damaged black-and-white photograph from her apron pocket and handed it to him. It showed a young woman standing proudly by the very same pastry cart, holding a toddler who had a distinct crescent-shaped birthmark on his left wrist.

Thomas stared at the photo. He looked down at his own left wrist, where the exact same birthmark resided.

"That child is me," Thomas whispered, his voice cracking.

Tears streamed down Clara's wrinkled cheeks.

"I never abandoned you, my sweet boy," she whispered.
