Previously: When Thomas paused at a humble pastry cart in the rain, his wealthy fiancée urged him to walk away. But one bite of a simple croissant unlocked a shocking family secret.

The revelation hanging in the damp air felt heavy and impossible. Sarah stared at the tattered photograph, her face twisting into a mask of pure disgust and disbelief. She snatched Thomas's arm, trying to drag him away from the old woman.

"Thomas, this is an obvious scam!" Sarah hissed, her voice sharp. "Street grifters do this all the time. They target wealthy men like you. Put that garbage down and let's get into the car."

But Thomas couldn't move. His eyes were fixed on Clara's weathered face. The shape of her nose, the curve of her jaw—it was like looking into a mirror that had aged forty years. He gently pulled his arm away from Sarah's grip and stepped closer to the pastry cart.

"What do you mean you didn't abandon me?" Thomas asked, his voice shaking. "My adoptive parents, the Harringtons, told me my mother left me on the steps of a church in the middle of winter. They saved me."

Clara shook her head, a bitter sob escaping her lips.

A Dark Truth Revealed

"They lied to you, Thomas," Clara sobbed, clutching her damp plaid shawl tightly around her shoulders. "Thirty years ago, your father was a powerful man in this city. I was just a poor baker, struggling to pay my rent. When my husband passed away, the Harringtons offered to help me. Instead, they framed me for a crime I didn't commit. They threatened to put me in prison for life and send you to a state facility where I would never see you again."

She paused, wiping her tears with her apron.

"They gave me a choice," Clara continued. "Give you up to them legally, or lose you to the system forever. They forced me to sign the adoption papers under duress. They paid off the judges, sealed the records, and warned me that if I ever tried to contact you, they would destroy whatever life I had left."

Thomas felt a cold dread settle in his stomach. The loving parents who had raised him, who had funded his education and shaped his career, were monsters who had stolen him from his real mother.

Just then, Thomas's phone vibrated in his pocket. It was his adoptive mother, Eleanor Harrington. He answered it on speaker.

"Thomas, darling, where are you?" Eleanor's polished voice echoed. "Sarah called me. She says you are making a scene in the street with a beggar."

"I'm standing here with Clara, Mother," Thomas said, his voice cold and steady. "She just showed me a photo of us."

A sharp gasp came from the other end of the line, followed by a long, chilling silence. When Eleanor spoke again, the warm maternal tone was completely gone.

"Listen to me carefully, Thomas," Eleanor threatened. "That woman is a parasite. If you do not walk away from her right now, I will personally ensure you are stripped of your inheritance, fired from the firm, and ruined in this city. You choose right now: your perfect life, or that worthless street vendor."
