A Miracle on the Cobblestoned Street

The afternoon sun cast a warm, amber glow over the cobblestone streets of the historic district. Adelaide sat quietly in her specialized wheelchair, her cream silk dress draped elegantly over her lifeless legs. Beside her, her faithful spaniel lay resting, its tail occasionally thumping against the stones. To the casual observer, Adelaide had everything—wealth, beauty, and a grand estate. But her legs had been paralyzed for five years, ever since a devastating carriage accident that had also stolen her memories of the year preceding it.

Suddenly, the peaceful atmosphere was shattered. A disheveled young man in a tattered beige shirt and a dirt-streaked face rushed toward her. Adelaide gasped, pulling back in instinctive fear as he reached directly for her feet. "Don't touch me!" she cried out, her heart hammering against her ribs.

Florence, Adelaide’s loyal maid in her stiff grey uniform, rushed forward to intervene, grabbing the intruder by his shoulders. "Get back! Leave her ladyship alone!" she scolded, trying to drag him away.

But Adelaide, looking into the stranger's intense, sorrowful eyes, felt an inexplicable jolt of recognition deep within her soul. "Leave him alone, Florence," Adelaide commanded, her voice trembling but firm.

"Let's see what he wants."

The young man, Arthur, sank to his knees. Without a word, he placed his rough, calloused hands onto the metal footrest of her wheelchair. What happened next defied all laws of science. A blinding, magical golden light began to emanate from his palms, wrapping around Adelaide's ankles. Florence gasped, stepping back in stunned disbelief.

Adelaide felt an intense, comforting warmth rush up her legs. For the first time in half a decade, she felt her toes wiggle. Tears welled in her eyes as she looked down, then back up at the mysterious healer.

"How?"
she whispered, her voice choking with emotion.

Arthur looked deeply into her eyes, a bittersweet smile playing on his lips.

"Soon you will remember me,"
he murmured softly before slipping away into the gathering crowd.
