A Bitter Walk Down the Aisle

The grand cathedral was bathed in the warm, golden glow of flickering sconces, casting long shadows across the stone floor. Soft, classical organ music swelled, echoing off the high vaulted ceilings and the towering stained-glass windows. To any outsider, it was a picture-perfect wedding. Thomas, a seventy-one-year-old retired carpenter with kind eyes and short grey hair, stood at the entrance of the sanctuary. He looked exceptionally handsome in his classic black tuxedo, a wide, beaming smile lighting up his face. He was about to perform the proudest duty of his life: walking his only daughter, Grace, down the aisle.

But as they took their first steps together, the contrast between father and daughter was heartbreaking. While Thomas waved happily to the guests in the pews, Grace was completely overcome with grief. Tears streamed down her auburn hair, staining her cheeks and dampening her elegant long-sleeved satin gown. Her chest heaved with silent, heavy sobs. The guests whispered, assuming she was merely overwhelmed by the emotional beauty of the day. They had no idea of the devastating truth.

Just five minutes before the doors opened, Grace had been alone in the bridal suite. Her father had stepped out to fetch her a glass of water, leaving his tuxedo jacket on a chair. Seeking a tissue, Grace had reached into his pocket and pulled out a thick white envelope bearing the logo of her future in-laws’ prestigious law firm. Inside was a signed agreement. Her future mother-in-law, Eleanor, had blackmailed Thomas. To protect a minor, long-resolved mistake from Thomas's youth, he had signed over his life savings and the deed to his beloved family home. He had sacrificed everything so Grace could marry into the wealthy Vance family without scandal.

"I love you, Grace. Be happy. You deserve this," Thomas whispered as they reached the altar.

Grace looked at her groom, Julian, who stood smiling his polished, hollow smile, and Eleanor, who watched with smug satisfaction. Her heart shattered into a million pieces.
