A Miraculous Touch on Cobblestone Street

The sun beat warm against the historic cobblestone streets of Newport, but Clara felt only the familiar, cold numbness that had anchored her to her wooden wheelchair for five agonizing years. Wrapped in her elegant emerald green gown, she sat near the park gates, her faithful golden retriever resting his heavy head against her knee. To the passing world, Clara was a picture of tragic aristocracy—wealthy, beautiful, and utterly broken since the car accident that had stolen her ability to walk and fractured her memories.

Suddenly, her dog pricked up his ears. A disheveled young boy, his face smudged with soot and his grey shirt torn, slipped through the crowd. He locked eyes with Clara, his gaze carrying an intensity that made her breath catch. Before Martha, Clara's stern maid, could intervene, the boy sank to his knees. His dusty hands reached directly for Clara’s feet.

"Don't touch me!" Clara gasped, pulling back in instinctual fear.

Martha rushed forward, her dark navy uniform rustling as she grabbed the boy’s shoulder. "Get away from her, you street urchin!" she scolded, attempting to drag him backward.

But something in the boy’s eyes stopped Clara's heart. "Leave him alone, Martha," Clara ordered, her voice trembling but firm. "Let's see what he wants."

The boy, Toby, didn't speak. He gently placed his palms flat against the wooden footrest of the wheelchair. In an instant, a soft, golden light began to emanate from his hands, glowing intensely against the cobblestones. A wave of intense, tingling warmth surged up Clara’s legs—a sensation she hadn't felt in half a decade.

Martha gasped, stepping back in stunned disbelief. Clara stared down at her legs, tears welling in her eyes as her toes miraculously twitched.

"How?" Clara whispered, her voice cracking with emotion.

Toby looked deep into her eyes, a sad, knowing smile touching his lips. "Soon you will remember me," he whispered softly, before slipping away into the bustling crowd.
