A Mother's Worst Nightmare

The kitchen was always the warmest room in the house, filled with the rich scent of simmering garlic and herbs. Clara stood by the stove, stirring the pasta sauce, enjoying a rare moment of peace. But the peace shattered the moment her eight-year-old daughter, Lily, slipped into the room. Lily’s usual bright energy was entirely gone; her blonde ponytail hung loose, and her shoulders were slumped. She wrapped her small arms tightly around Clara’s waist, burying her face in her mother's apron.

Clara turned down the flame and knelt to meet her daughter's eyes. "What's wrong, sweetheart?" she asked, brushing a stray hair from Lily's forehead. Lily looked up, her blue eyes wide with a deep, unsettling fear. Clara felt a sudden chill run down her spine as Lily whispered the words that would haunt her:

"Mom, it felt like someone was in my bed with me last night."

Clara’s heart hammered against her ribs. She tried to play it off as a nightmare, comforting her trembling daughter with soft promises. But deep down, a mother’s instinct told her otherwise. That very afternoon, Clara purchased a small, high-definition security camera disguised as a digital clock and placed it on Lily's bookshelf, facing the bed.

Later that night, while the house was dead silent, Clara sat in the dark living room, her face illuminated only by the glow of her laptop screen. She fast-forwarded through hours of static footage until she hit the 3:00 AM mark. Her breath caught. A figure in light blue scrubs stepped into the frame, standing silently over Lily’s sleeping form. It was her husband, Mark. Tears streamed down Clara's face as she watched him lean over their daughter.

Suddenly, the living room light flickered. Clara gasped, slamming the laptop half-shut. Standing in the doorway was Mark, still wearing his hospital scrubs, his bearded face cast in deep, menacing shadows. He stepped closer, his voice cold and threatening:

"Turn that off or you're gonna ruin everything."
