The Secret in the Scullery

The air in the basement kitchen of the Grand Horizon Hotel was thick with the scent of yeast and cold stainless steel. Down here, far beneath the glittering chandeliers of the grand ballroom where his engagement party was underway, Matteo found the truth he had been denied for three long years. He stood in his sharp charcoal grey suit, his chest heaving as he stared at the woman sobbing by the commercial sink. It was Elena, his ex-wife, wearing a faded denim apron stained with flour and tears.

"Elena, what are you doing here?"

Matteo’s voice cracked, a mixture of disbelief and sudden, sharp panic. Elena gasped, dropping a heavy metal mixing bowl into the sink. She tried to turn her face away, but it was too late. The harsh, fluorescent kitchen lighting caught the dark, purplish bruise swelling along her cheekbone.

"Matteo, please, you shouldn't be down here,"

she wept, her voice trembling. Before Matteo could step closer, the heavy double doors of the kitchen swung open. Victoria, his glamorous fiancée, stepped inside, her champagne-colored gown rustling against the greasy tile floor. She waved her manicured hand dismissively, a cold, patronizing smile on her face.

"Come on, Matteo, you're overreacting,"

Victoria said smoothly, her eyes flashing with a warning directed at Elena. "She's just trying to help with the catering. She's clumsy, that's all."

Ignoring his fiancée, Matteo stepped forward and gently cradled Elena’s bruised face in his hands. His heart shattered at how fragile she felt. He looked deep into her tear-filled eyes.

"Look at me,"

he whispered, his voice thick with emotion. "Do you really want to stay down here? Who did this to you?"

Elena’s gaze flicked to Victoria, who was glaring at her with icy menace. Tears spilled over Elena’s bruised cheek as she finally broke her silence.

"No,"

she sobbed. "She said I belong in this kitchen because I'm the mother of your daughter. She said if I ever left, I would never see Lily again."

Matteo froze. The world seemed to stop spinning. He slowly released Elena and turned around to face Victoria, his eyes burning with absolute, terrifying fury.
