The Clash in the Kitchen

The metallic hum of the Grand Regency’s industrial kitchen was usually a source of comfort for Elena. As a head pastry chef, she poured her soul into her craft, using the demanding work to distract herself from the quiet heartbreak of raising her daughter, Lily, alone. But tonight, the stainless-steel walls felt like a prison. Clad in her white chef's coat and navy apron, Elena stood by the washing station, tears streaming down her face, her hand trembling as she touched the painful, blooming bruise on her left cheek.

Suddenly, the heavy double doors swung open. Matteo, looking impossibly handsome in a dark blue double-breasted suit, rushed into the room. He had slipped away from his own lavish engagement party upstairs. Seeing Elena in distress, his eyes widened in shock. Elena gasped, slipping backward against the wet counter.

"Matteo, what are you doing here?"

she whispered, trying to shield her face. Matteo didn't hesitate. He closed the distance between them, his voice laced with panic.

"Elena, what's going on?"

Before she could answer, a cold, elegant voice cut through the humid air. Victoria, Matteo’s fiancée, stepped into the kitchen, her gold sequin gown shimmering mockingly under the harsh fluorescent lights. She shrugged, waving a manicured hand dismissively.

"Come on, overreacting. She's just trying to help,"

Victoria said, her voice dripping with condescension. Matteo ignored his fiancée, turning his full attention back to Elena. He tenderly cupped her bruised cheek, his thumb brushing away a fresh tear.

"Look at me. Do you really want to stay down here?"

he asked softly. Elena looked into the eyes of the man she once loved, the father of her child, and let out a broken sob.

"No. She said I belong in this kitchen because I'm the mother of your daughter,"

she cried. Matteo froze. Slowly, he turned around to face Victoria, his face contorting into a look of sheer, unadulterated fury.
