My Mother-in-Law Slapped Me in the Hospital, Then I Learned Her Dark Scheme

The sterile, blue-lit room felt more like a prison than a place of healing.

Megan lay trapped in the hospital bed, her legs encased in heavy white plaster casts that anchored her to the mattress. Every tiny movement sent a wave of white-hot agony through her lower body. The car crash had been a blur of screeching tires and shattering glass, followed by the terrifying rush of early labor. By some miracle, her newborn twins, Leo and Lily, were sleeping peacefully in a metal bassinet nearby, their tiny chests rising and falling. But Megan was far from peaceful; she was drowning in a wave of uncontrollable panic.

She buried her face in her hands, her tears soaking through her skin as she sobbed. Where was David? Why hadn't her husband come to see his own children? The door clicked open, and Megan looked up, expecting to see David. Instead, her mother-in-law, Helen, stepped in. Helen wore a dark wool coat, her expression cold and unyielding as she stood over the bed.

"Stop it!" Helen commanded, her voice cutting through the clinical hum of the room.

Before Megan could speak, Helen reached down and grabbed her face, forcing her to look up. With a swift, sharp motion, Helen slapped her cheek. The sting of the blow echoed in the quiet room. Megan gasped in shock, her eyes wide as Helen sneered, "Look at me!"

Megan trembled, staring at the woman who was supposed to be family. "Why are you doing this?" she whimpered. Helen let go of her jaw, a cold, calculated smile playing on her lips as she pulled a manila folder from her coat. She tossed it onto the bed, right beside Megan's cast-bound legs.

"You are unfit, Megan," Helen said coldly. "And David agrees. He signed the custody papers. The babies are mine now."
