The Frozen Rescue

The bitter winter wind of the northern wilderness whipped across Blackwood Lake, carrying a thick, ghostly mist that swallowed the distant treeline of towering pines. Jack, a sturdy man in his late thirties with a dark beard frosted white by the sub-zero temperatures, trudged through the snow. He wore a heavy, navy blue insulated coat, his breath escaping in rapid, icy plumes. He was miles from safety, but a desperate, thrashing sound in the distance had drawn him off his path. As he neared the center of the lake, his heart sank. A large grey wolf had fallen through a soft patch of ice and was clawing frantically at the slick, freezing edges of a dark hole, its strength rapidly failing.

Without a second thought, Jack threw himself onto the treacherous ice, crawling on his knees to distribute his weight. The ice groaned and cracked beneath him, a terrifying reminder of the deep, freezing water below. He reached the edge of the hole and looked into the wolf’s eyes. There was no wild aggression in them, only a pure, pleading terror.

"Come on, come on, you can do it!"
Jack roared, his voice cracking against the wind as he grabbed the wolf’s heavy, saturated paws.

The freezing water burned Jack’s hands like fire. With a mighty, agonizing heave that strained every muscle in his back, he pulled the heavy animal upward. The wolf scrambled, its claws finding purchase on the solid ice, and Jack fell backward, exhausted and gasping for air. As they both lay panting on the ice, the silence of the lake was shattered by a low rustling. Through the mist, a dozen dark shapes began to emerge. It was the rest of the pack, their eyes glowing faintly in the cold winter light as they surrounded the exhausted man and his rescued companion.
