Previously: When Jack risked his life to pull a drowning wolf from a frozen lake, he didn't expect the pack to surround him—or his bitter brother-in-law to arrive with a dark confession.

Justice on the Ice

The tables had turned in a matter of seconds. The very wilderness Marcus had tried to use as a murder weapon had now become Jack's shield. Terrified and shaking, Marcus fell to his knees, weeping as the wolves closed the circle around him.

"Please, Jack! Call them off! I'll give you the land, I'll confess to everything, just don't let them kill me!"
he screamed, his voice carrying across the desolate, frozen lake. Jack pulled his phone from his inner pocket, his frozen fingers barely able to press the record button. He forced Marcus to look into the camera and confess to the sabotage, documenting the entire betrayal for the authorities.

Once the confession was recorded, Jack looked at the alpha wolf. In a calm, steady voice, he whispered, "It's okay. Let him go." As if understanding his words, the alpha gave a short, sharp huff, and the pack slowly stepped back, parting just enough to let Marcus scramble frantically toward his snowmobile. Marcus started the engine and tore away into the distance, never to return to the valley again. He would soon face the full force of the law, but for now, Jack was safe.

The wolf Jack had rescued walked up to him, nudging his hand with its wet nose before turning to join its pack. Jack watched as the wolves melted back into the mist, leaving him alone on the quiet ice. He knew the walk back to his cabin would be long and cold, but for the first time in years, he didn't feel lonely. He had found a strange, wild family in the depths of the forest, and they had given him a second chance at life. Sometimes, the kindness we show to the world has a way of finding its way back to us when we need it most.
