The Hallway of Secrets

The air in the private wing of the St. Jude Medical Clinic smelled of pine disinfectant and cold, heavy silence. Ashley adjusted the jacket of her grey skirt suit, her heels clicking softly against the polished linoleum floor. Beside her, David walked with a tense, hurried stride, his light blue dress shirt slightly creased from a long day of worry. They were looking for David’s mother, Eleanor. She had been acting strangely for months, disappearing for hours under the guise of routine checkups, but today, the anxiety radiating from her had been too much to ignore.

As they rounded the corner of the brightly lit corridor, the harsh fluorescent tube lights overhead cast long, sterile shadows. There she was. Eleanor stood near the end of the hallway, wearing her favorite cream-colored cardigan and navy blue trousers, clutching her small leather handbag tightly against her stomach. She looked fragile, but her eyes darted around the corridor with a feverish intensity that made Ashley’s stomach tighten with unease.

Before David could call out to her, Eleanor turned and locked eyes with them. In an instant, her fragile demeanor shattered. Her face contorted into a mask of pure panic, her pale skin turning a ghostly shade of white. She threw her arm out in a desperate, warning gesture, her fingers trembling violently.

"Wait, get back!" she screamed, her voice echoing shrally off the tiled walls.

Without waiting for a response, the elderly woman bolted frantically toward them, her navy trousers swishing as she ran with a desperate speed that seemed impossible for her age. She looked like a woman trying to block a blast radius, her eyes wide with a terrifying urgency. David froze for a fraction of a second, his mother’s sudden panic paralyzing him, before his protective instincts kicked in. Something was terribly wrong behind those closed doors, and Eleanor was willing to do anything to keep them from seeing it.
