Previously: When David and Ashley followed his mother Eleanor to a mysterious medical clinic, they expected a routine checkup. Instead, they uncovered a dark, twenty-five-year-old family secret hidden behind locked doors.

The Ghost in Room 304

David sidestepped his mother’s lunging grasp, ignoring the way her fingernails scraped against his light blue sleeve. He rushed past her, driven by a sudden, primal need for answers. Eleanor stumbled behind him, sobbing hysterically as she tried to grab his arm, but it was too late. David reached the heavy wooden door of Room 304 and flung it open.

The room inside was dim, illuminated only by the soft glow of medical monitors. Lying in the center of the room, hooked up to an array of humming machines, was an elderly man with pale, hollow cheeks and a crown of thin white hair. David took one step inside and stopped breathing. The man’s facial structure, the shape of his jaw, the slight curve of his brow—it was like looking into a distorted mirror of his own future. It was Thomas, the father David had been told died in a car crash twenty-five years ago.

The man in the bed slowly opened his eyes, staring at David with a faint, recognition-filled gaze. He tried to speak, but only a dry gasp escaped his throat. Eleanor rushed into the room, slamming the door behind her and locking it with a trembling hand. She threw herself between David and the bed, her cream cardigan stained with her own tears.

"David, please, you don't understand!" she wept, clutching her handbag to her chest. "I did this to protect you! He was a dangerous man, a monster who would have ruined our lives!"

But David wasn't listening. His eyes had drifted to the bedside table, where a thick, blue medical folder lay open. He snatched it up, his hands shaking violently as he flipped through the pages. What he read made his blood run cold. There were legal documents declaring Thomas mentally incompetent, signed solely by Eleanor. But worse, there was a fresh consent form for an experimental, highly invasive organ transplant. The donor was Thomas. The named recipient, scheduled for next week, was David.
