The clatter of copper pans and the hum of the industrial refrigerator did little to drown out the soft, choked sobs coming from the back of the dimly lit kitchen. Matteo stepped through the swinging double doors, his tailored black suit contrasting sharply with the sterile, stainless-steel environment. He had come looking for his mother, Victoria, but instead, his eyes locked onto a figure huddled by the prep sink.

It was Elena. Her auburn hair was pulled back in a messy knot, and her black apron was damp with water and tears. Five years ago, she had vanished without a trace, leaving Matteo heartbroken and raising their infant daughter, Sophia, alone.

Elena gasped as she looked up, her eyes wide with terror.

"Matteo, what are you doing here?"
she whispered, quickly trying to wipe her face.

Matteo’s heart hammered against his ribs. He rushed forward.

"Elena, what's going on? Why are you here?"

Before Elena could answer, the sharp click of designer heels echoed on the tile. Victoria stepped into the light, her sapphire gown shimmering, looking entirely out of place in the greasy kitchen. She waved her manicured hand dismissively.

"Come on, overreacting. She's just trying to help,"
Victoria said, her voice dripping with cold condescension.

Matteo ignored his mother. He reached out, his hands trembling as he gently cradled Elena’s face. As he lifted her chin, the harsh fluorescent light revealed a dark, painful bruise blooming across her cheek. Tears spilled over the injured skin.

"Look at me,"
Matteo pleaded, his voice cracking with emotion.
"Do you really want to stay down here?"

Elena wept, shaking her head.

"No. She said I belong in this kitchen because I'm the mother of your daughter."

The words hung in the humid air, heavy and devastating. Matteo froze, the realization of his mother's monstrous deception crashing down on him. He slowly let go of Elena and spun around to face Victoria, his face contorted in absolute rage.
