The scent of ozone, burnt powder, and cold metal always felt like home to Maeve. At seventy-three, her silver hair was tied back neatly, and her black windbreaker rustled slightly as she walked into the high-end indoor shooting range. It was a place dominated by youth, high-tech gear, and loud bravado. Standing in the center of it all was Lance, the reigning state champion, boasting to a crowd of admirers. His white tank top clung to his athletic frame, and his smug grin faded slightly when he saw Maeve carrying a worn, heavy leather gun case.

The Unwelcome Visitor

Lance stepped into her path, blocking the lane with an arrogant smirk.

"This is not a retirement club, lady,"
he chuckled, loud enough for the surrounding onlookers to hear. A wave of snickers rippled through the crowd. Maeve didn't flinch. She simply looked at him with calm, ice-blue eyes that had seen far tougher men than him. Without a word, she stepped past him, slid her ID card into the electronic reader, and opened her case.

She pulled out a classic, custom-tuned steel pistol. It wasn't flashy, but it was perfectly maintained. In one fluid, practiced motion, she raised the weapon. Before Lance could even utter another sarcastic comment, Maeve pulled the trigger. Five rapid, thunderous shots echoed through the range in a flawless, rhythmic heartbeat. The target zipped back toward the firing line. When it stopped, the crowd went dead silent. Five bullets had torn through the exact center of the bullseye, creating a single, perfect hole.

Maeve turned her head slightly, her expression resolute.

"I came here to compete,"
she said, her voice quiet but carrying immense weight. An onlooker gasped in disbelief, whispering, "Impossible!" to his friend. Maeve walked past the stunned crowd to the registration desk, where Archibald, the veteran head official, was organizing the tournament roster. She took the pen and signed her name. Archibald casually picked up the paper, but as his eyes scanned the signature, he froze. He slowly lowered his reading glasses, his face draining of color as he whispered,
"Wait... that name."
