The Foyer of Betrayal

The grand foyer of the Sterling mansion was usually a place of celebration, but tonight, its beige travertine floors felt as cold as ice. Mariana stood near the sweeping staircase, her heart hammering against her ribs. She was wearing her favorite royal blue satin dress, a garment she had chosen to celebrate what was supposed to be a joyous family milestone. Instead, it had become the backdrop for her ultimate humiliation.

Without warning, Ryan grabbed her arm. His face was contorted in a mask of pure rage, his curly brown hair disheveled. With a violent thrust, he shoved Mariana backward. She stumbled, her heel catching on the edge of the travertine floor, barely keeping her balance as her black clutch fell from her hands.

"Never talk to my mother like that!" Ryan yelled, his voice echoing off the high ceilings.

Behind him stood Eleanor, his mother. Draped in a champagne-colored silk dress and adorned with her signature pearl necklace, the older woman did not look shocked. Instead, a smug, venomous smile spread across her face. She had spent months whispering poison into Ryan's ear, and tonight, her machinations had finally borne fruit.

Mariana didn't cry. She slowly knelt down, picking up her black clutch with trembling fingers. When she stood up and faced her husband, a thin, red scratch was visible on her pale cheek—a parting gift from Ryan's rough hands. She glared at him, her eyes burning with a cold, quiet fury that Ryan had never seen before.

"Remember every word you just said," Mariana whispered, her voice deadly calm.

She turned on her heel and walked out through the massive double doors, never looking back. A waiting luxury sedan was idling in the driveway. Mariana stepped inside, the heavy door shutting out the noise of the Sterling estate. Sliding into the dark leather seat, she pulled out her phone. The lawyer answered on the first ring.

"Ms. Mariana, the lawyers have activated all the clauses," the voice on the other end said.

Mariana looked out the window as the mansion faded into the distance. A chilling, resolute expression settled over her face.

"Freeze everything," she commanded.
