The Echoes of Betrayal

The grand foyer of the Sterling estate had always felt more like a museum than a home, but today, its towering marble walls echoed with a raw, heartbreaking tension. Arthur stood near the base of the sweeping spiral staircase, his chest tightening as he held his four-year-old son, Noah. The little boy was sobbing softly, his face buried in his father’s beige linen shirt. Arthur’s eyes were locked on Sarah, the young blonde maid who had brought so much warmth to their cold house over the past year. She was dressed in her black uniform, her white apron stained with tears.

"Why did you fire her?" Arthur demanded, his voice trembling with a mixture of confusion and growing anger.

From the stairs behind them, a cold, aristocratic voice cut through the air. Eleanor, Arthur’s silver-haired mother, stood rigidly on the steps, looking down at them with an icy, unyielding stare.

"Because she lied from the day she entered this house," Eleanor replied coldly, her posture perfectly straight, devoid of any maternal warmth.

Arthur shook his head, refusing to believe his mother’s harsh words. He looked back at Sarah, whose shoulders shook as she sobbed. In her trembling hands, she clutched an antique silver pocket watch—a family heirloom that Arthur knew belonged to his late wife, Celeste, who had passed away shortly after Noah’s birth.

"Celeste was my sister," Sarah tearfully revealed, looking up to meet Arthur’s stunned gaze.

The air left Arthur’s lungs in a sudden gasp. His late wife had never mentioned having a sister; he had been told she was an orphan with no living relatives. He stepped closer to Sarah, his heart hammering against his ribs.

"Tell me the truth," Arthur whispered, desperate for answers.

Sarah took a shaky breath, her voice barely a whisper as she looked from Arthur to the stern woman on the stairs.

"Your mother kept Noah's..." she began, before Eleanor’s sharp voice cut her off.
