The opulent hallways of the Vance manor had always felt more like a museum than a home, but today, they felt like a battlefield. Arthur stood at the foot of the curved marble staircase, his chest tight with a mixture of anger and confusion. In his arms, his five-year-old son, Noah, sobbed softly, burying his face into Arthur’s light blue button-down shirt. Standing a few feet away was Sarah, the young brunette maid who had been with them for barely six months. She was dressed in her grey and white uniform, her shoulders shaking as she clutched a small object tightly in her hand.

On the stairs above them stood Eleanor, Arthur’s mother. Draped in an elegant navy dress, her posture was rigid, her expression cast in stone.

A Shocking Dismissal

"Why did you fire her?"
Arthur demanded, his voice echoing off the high ceilings. He looked from his crying son to his mother, searching for any sign of humanity in her cold eyes.

Eleanor didn’t blink. She looked down at them with aristocratic disdain.

"Because she lied from the day she entered this house,"
Eleanor replied coldly, her voice sharp enough to cut glass.

At those words, Sarah let out a ragged sob. She opened her trembling hands, revealing an ornate silver pocket watch—an heirloom Arthur recognized instantly. It had belonged to his late wife, Celeste, who had passed away shortly after Noah was born.

"Celeste was my sister,"
Sarah tearfully revealed, her voice cracking under the weight of the confession.

Arthur froze. His breath caught in his throat. Celeste had always claimed she had no surviving family. He stared at Sarah, then at the watch, and finally up at his mother, whose face had gone pale.

"Tell me the truth,"
Arthur whispered, his voice trembling with a sudden, terrifying realization.

Sarah looked up at him, tears streaming down her face.

"Your mother kept Noah's..."
before Eleanor sharply interrupted, her voice booming through the foyer.
