Arthur held his four-year-old son, Noah, tightly against his chest, feeling the boy's small shoulders tremble with tears. The grand lobby of the Sterling mansion, with its towering ceilings and sweeping marble winding staircase, had never felt colder. Bright window light streamed through the massive stained-glass panes, casting long, sharp shadows across the floor. Arthur’s gaze was locked on his mother, Eleanor, who stood imperiously halfway up the stairs, wrapped in a luxury grey cashmere cardigan.

Below them stood Sarah, the young maid who had cared for Noah with an unmatched tenderness for the past six months. Today, she was stripped of her duties, dressed in her traditional black attire, her dark brown French braid slightly disheveled.

The Confrontation in the Lobby

"Why did you fire her, Mother?" Arthur demanded, his voice echoing in the vast space. "She has been a blessing to Noah. He loves her."

Eleanor gripped the polished mahogany banister, her expression hardening.

"Because she lied from the day she entered this house," Eleanor replied coldly, her voice dripping with aristocratic disdain. "We do not tolerate deceit under this roof, Arthur."

Arthur looked down at Sarah, whose eyes were red and swollen. In her trembling hands, she clutched a vintage silver pocket watch—an heirloom Arthur recognized instantly. It had belonged to his late wife, Celeste, who had allegedly abandoned them years ago.

"Tell me the truth, Sarah," Arthur whispered, his heart hammering against his ribs. "What is going on?"

Sarah looked up, a tear spilling down her cheek. She held the watch close to her chest.

"Celeste was my sister," Sarah tearfully revealed, her voice cracking under the weight of the confession. "I didn't come here for a job, Arthur. I came for answers."

The lobby fell into a suffocating silence. Arthur’s breath hitched.

"Your mother kept Noah's..." Sarah began, her voice trembling violently, before Eleanor sharply interrupted from the stairs.
