The Secret in the Foyer

The grand foyer of the Vance estate always felt cold, despite the sprawling crystal chandeliers and the sweeping white marble staircase. But today, the air was absolutely freezing. Arthur stood near the bottom of the stairs, his chest tightening as he held his six-year-old son, Noah, who was sobbing into his white oxford shirt. Across from them stood Sarah, the young maid who had brought life back into their grieving home after Arthur's wife, Celeste, passed away.

Sarah was dressed in her classic black and white uniform, her dark hair tied back, but her face was stained with tears. In her trembling hands, she clutched a vintage silver pocket watch—an heirloom Arthur recognized instantly. Standing imperiously on the stairs above them was Eleanor, Arthur's mother, draped in a stern charcoal grey dress, looking down like a judge delivering a sentence.

"Why did you fire her, Mother?" Arthur demanded, his voice shaking with a mixture of anger and confusion. "Noah loves her. She has done nothing but care for this family."

Eleanor didn't flinch. She gripped the banister, her eyes narrowing.

"Because she lied from the day she entered this house," Eleanor replied coldly, her voice echoing off the high ceilings. "She is a fraud, Arthur. She does not belong here."

Arthur looked back at Sarah, expecting a denial. Instead, the young woman sobbed harder, pressing the silver pocket watch against her chest. When she looked up, her eyes were filled with a raw, agonizing pain.

"Celeste was my sister," Sarah tearfully revealed, her voice cracking under the weight of the confession.

Arthur felt the ground shift beneath his feet. Celeste had never mentioned a sister. He stepped closer, his heart hammering against his ribs.

"Tell me the truth, Sarah," he whispered, desperate for answers.

Sarah took a shaky breath, looking from Arthur to the stern woman on the stairs.

"Your mother kept Noah's..." Sarah started, her voice trembling, but Eleanor cut her off with a sharp command to leave.
