An Unexpected Competitor

The bright fluorescent lights of the Oakridge Shooting Range hummed with the electric energy of the annual state championship. Spectators packed the gallery, their murmurs creating a low, buzzing hum that filled the cavernous room. At the center of the attention was Hunter, a smug twenty-five-year-old reigning champion clad in a sleek white and green shooting jersey. He was basking in the adoration of his fans, adjusting his custom-molded pistol with the practiced ease of someone who believed he was untouchable.

Then, the heavy double doors at the back of the hall swung open. Clara, a resolute sixty-two-year-old woman with a sharp, silver-grey bob and a worn dark grey windbreaker, stepped inside. She carried a vintage, scratched leather gear case that looked older than most of the competitors in the room. The crowd fell quiet, whispering in confusion as she marched straight toward the active shooting line with calm, deliberate steps.

Hunter smirked, crossing his arms as she approached.

"Hey, ma'am, I think you took a wrong turn. This isn't a retirement club,"
he called out, prompting a wave of snickers from his friends in the gallery. Clara didn't blink. She reached the registration desk, unzipped her jacket, and calmly slapped her laminated ID card onto the counter. The laughter intensified, but Clara remained completely unfazed. She unlatched her case, revealing a pristine, heavily customized classic pistol. She lifted it with a practiced grip, looking directly at Hunter.
"I came here to compete,"
she said, her voice quiet but carrying a steely resonance that cut through the room.

Before anyone could utter another mocking word, Clara raised her weapon. In a blur of motion, she fired five rapid, thunderous shots down the range. Every single round tore through the exact center of the bullseye, leaving one single, ragged hole.

"Impossible!"
a spectator shouted from the back. At the official's desk, Frank, an older official wearing reading glasses, stared at Clara's registration sheet. He adjusted his spectacles, his hands suddenly trembling as he whispered,
"Wait, that name..."
