Previously: When a smug bureaucrat throws a weathered veteran against a wall and steals his pension, he has no idea that a powerful general is watching from a nearby convoy.

Justice is Served

Within seconds of the General’s phone call, Gregory's personal cell phone began to ring. He answered it with a trembling hand, only to hear the furious voice of the state commissioner on the other end. The commissioner informed Gregory that his immediate termination had been processed, his assets were being frozen, and federal investigators were already on their way to his office. Gregory’s clipboard slipped from his hands, clattering onto the concrete as he realized his career and his freedom were gone.

Two military police officers stepped forward from the convoy, securing Gregory’s hands behind his back. The young bureaucrat who had been so smug just minutes ago was now weeping, begging for mercy as he was led away to one of the waiting SUVs.

General Montgomery turned back to Bernard, a warm smile replacing his stern expression. He handed the gold coin back to his old friend, placing it gently in the veteran’s calloused hand.

"I've been looking for you, Bernard," the General said softly. "When I heard about the administrative 'errors' in this district, I knew something was wrong. Your pension has been fully restored, and I've personally authorized a retroactive promotion and back pay for all the trouble you've endured."

Bernard looked down at the gold coin in his hand, a tear rolling down his weathered cheek. For the first time in weeks, the heavy weight of worry lifted from his shoulders. He didn't have to worry about rent, or groceries, or being thrown out of his home. He looked up at his old friend and offered a grateful smile.

"Thank you, Montgomery," Bernard said. "I guess some soldiers never stop watching each other's backs."

This powerful story serves as a reminder that respect is a debt we owe to those who fought for our freedom. Behind a humble, worn jacket may lie a true hero who once carried the weight of the entire nation on his shoulders.
